The Red Dress: 380 Embroiderers, 51 Countries, 1 Dress

Conceived by British artist Kirstie Macleod, The Red Dress project brings together the stories and creative voices of people from around the world through the art of embroidery.

Over 14.5 years, the completed dress was embroidered by 367 women and girls, 7 men and boys, and 2 non-binary artists from 51 countries. The 141 commissioned artisans were paid for their work and received annual donations from exhibition fees and merchandise profits. Additional small embroideries were contributed by participants and audiences at events and exhibitions around the world.

What began as an exploration of identity and a way to connect cultures across borders has grown into a powerful platform for self-expression, giving people the opportunity to share their stories and have their voices heard. The project also celebrates embroidery as a form of domestic labour and craft that has historically been undervalued, particularly when practised by women.

Released in 2025, this beautiful paperback is the most up-to-date collection of stories from The Red Dress project, celebrating the people, places and intricate embroidery that have shaped this extraordinary work.
